PharmaVOICE September 20 08 DIA 2008 The 2008 DIA Annual Meeting THE 44TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE DRUG INFORMATION ASSOCIATION in Boston from June 2226, 2008, featuring 368 sessions, more than 1,100 speakers, and more than 850 exhibitors was the largest conference in the DIA’s history. The meeting drew 8,900 attendees from 56 countries representing Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Australia, as well as 50 representatives from academic institutions around the world. “This year we received the largest ever number of abstracts for the annual meeting,’ notes Annual Meeting Program Chair Jeffrey Sherman, M.D., FACP. “The genuinely amazing educational content delivered at the Annual Meeting reinforces the importance of the DIA volunteers who helped prepare or instruct every session and tutorial.” This year’s event included keynote addresses by Dennis Ausiello, M.D., Jackson Professor of Clinical Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Kathy Giusti, founder and CEO, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium. Speakers from U.S. and European regulatory agencies, the ReganUdall Foundation, PhRMA, and other organizations discussed their goals and experiences with the FDA Amendments Act of 2007 (FDAAA) and its impact on drug safety. Global drug development was a key focus of the annual meeting; attendees could choose from more than 100 sessions on issues affecting key regions of the world. “DIA needs to continue to grow globally and to better meet its members’ needs in the areas of information exchange, education, and networking opportunities, especially in pharma’s emerging markets,” says Linda McGoldrick, DIA Worldwide executive director. “Furthering this globalization initiative, the annual meeting featured more than 50 representatives from academic institutions around the world, and more than 100 sessions on topics important to markets such as Canada, Japan, Europe, Russia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Latin America, India, and China.” This year’s program committee created mega tracks in clinical research and information technology to enhance the quality of the presentations and their relevance to the challenges faced by today’s clinical research and information technology professionals.
